The scaling of the gripper affects the action and perception in teleoperated grasping via a robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery system

چکیده
We use psychophysics to investigate human-centered transparency of grasping in unilateral robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RAMIS) without force feedback. Instead of the classical definition of transparency, we define here a human-centered transparency, focusing on natural action and perception in RAMIS. Demonstrating this approach, we assess the effect of gripper scaling on human-centered transparency in teleoperated grasping of rigid objects. Thirty-one participants were divided into three groups, with different scaling between the opening of the gripper of the surgeon-side manipulator and the gripper of the surgical instrument. Each participant performed two experiments: (1) action experiment: reaching and grasping of different cylinders; and (2) perception experiment: reporting the size of the cylinders. In two out of three gripper scaling, teleoperated grasping was similar to natural grasping. In the action experiment, the maximal grip aperture of the surgical instrument was proportional to the size of the grasped object, and its variability did not depend on object size, whereas in the perception experiment, consistently with Weber's law, variability of perceived size increased with size. In the fine gripper scaling, action and perception variabilities decreased with size, suggesting reduced transparency. These results suggest that in our RAMIS system, if the gripper scaling is not too fine, grasping kinematics and the gap between action and perception are similar to natural grasping. This means that in the context of grasping, our system induces natural grasping behavior and is human-centered transparent. We anticipate that using psychophysics for optimizing human-centered teleoperation control will eventually improve the usability of RAMIS.

Minimally invasive total splenectomy in dogs: A clinical report
Cases of minimally-invasive surgery are gaining acceptance among surgeons and animal owners. One type of minimally-invasive surgery is total splenectomy, which is indicated for splenic tumors, trauma, torsions, and for dogs that require blood transfusion. To assess the safety of the technique, experimental laparoscopic splenectomies were performed in dogs for the first time in Iran. Three adult...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Results of Pulmonary Resection by Minimally Invasive Thoracoscopy for the Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer
Introduction: Lung cancer is the disease of modern era, and the rate of lung cancer mortality is three times as high as that for prostate cancer and twice as high as the rate for breast cancer. We aimed to analyze the results of pulmonary resection in patients with NSCLC by minimally invasive thoracoscopy. Materials and Methods: We studied 10 patients with NSCLC scheduled for surgical resectio...
متن کاملMethods for haptic feedback in teleoperated robot-assisted surgery
Teleoperated minimally invasive surgical robots can significantly enhance a surgeon's accuracy, dexterity and visualization. However, current commercially available systems do not include significant haptic (force and tactile) feedback to the operator. This paper describes experiments to characterize this problem, as well as several methods to provide haptic feedback in order to improve surgeon...
متن کاملAutomated Tissue Retraction for Robot-Assisted Surgical Procedures
Robotic surgical assistants (RSAs) are enhancing physician performance, enabling them to perform more delicate and precise minimally invasive surgery (MIS). However, these devices are currently tele-operated and lack autonomy. In this paper, we focus on automating a relatively simple but commonly performed surgical task of tissue retraction, which involves grasping and lifting a thin layer of t...
متن کاملThe superiority of paracostal endoscopic-assisted gastropexy over open incisional and belt loop gastropexy in dogs: a comparison of three prophylactic techniques
Prophylactic gastropexy is a procedure that prevents the occurrence of a life threatening condition known as gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV) in dogs. The objective of this study was to compare incisional, belt loop and minimally invasive endoscopically assisted gastropexy by evaluating different parameters such as surgical time, length of scar and score of pain in dogs. Twenty-one healthy, ...
